Finnish Flagships: the courage to reform research

iCAN is part of the Academy of Finland’s Flagship Programme. The ten Flagships create high-quality research, sustainable solutions, and societal impact.

The Flagships are clusters that combine close cooperation with business and society, adaptability and a strong commitment from host organisations. They are hosted by seven universities, five research institutes, Helsinki University Hospital and the Finnish Red Cross Blood Service. iCAN was selected as one of the Flagships in 2019, and the second term of the Programme continues until 2026.

The ten Finnish Flagships have the courage to reform research while also engaging in deeper multidisciplinary collaboration between both Finnish and international parties.

They create future know-how and sustainable solutions to society’s challenges, promoting economic growth by, for example, developing new business opportunities.

By providing substantial long-term funding, the Flagship programme accelerates active collaboration between different actors and facilitates the development and expansion of systematic operations.

The Academy of Finland’s total funding contribution to the Finnish Flagship Programme comes to more than 100 million euros. The host organisations support the Flagships with a further 500 million euros. The Academy is also prepared to fund the new Flagships with an additional 20 million euros over the coming years.
