iCAN retreat 2024 brought together our community

On 3rd October 2024, the iCAN community gathered for the iCAN retreat, hosting around 250 participants onsite and online, including project researchers, board members, and doctoral researchers and supervisors from the iCANDOC doctoral education pilot. Over the past year, our community has grown with the launch of the pilot and the iCAN National program.

The keynote Not all KRAS mutations are created equal was held by the Fox Chase Cancer Center Director Jonathan Chernoff, PhD. The day featured also a series of outstanding presentations from iCAN subprojects showcasing the advances made during the last year, as well as insights into the first iCANDOC projects that are about to commence.

There was also engaging discussion on where iCAN is now, and what lies ahead, as the attendees had the opportunity to hear greetings from the University of Helsinki by Anne Portaankorva (Vice Rector for Research, UH) and Markku Mäkijärvi‘s (Chief Medical Officer, HUS) perspectives, followed by a discussion with speakers and members of the Scientific and Impact Advisory Board.

We would like to congratulate the following winners of the Best Poster Award:

  • Maare Arffman (iCAN-LBTRIAL): Stratification of B-cell lymphoma patients using circulating tumor DNA risk profiles: an iCAN-LBTRIAL subproject,
  • Enni Martikainen: Functional precision medicine approach to identify novel treatment strategies for pediatric sarcomas (iCAN-PEDI)
  • Joona Jäntti (iCANDOC/iCAN-OCVA): Single Cell Readable Signal Recording System
  • Oussama Krami Senhaji (iCAN-OVCA): Impact of bacteria on DNA damage in high grade serous ovarian carcinoma

A heartfelt thanks to the organizing committee, the speakers, and all participants for making the retreat a success through their active and fruitful discussions.
